How to Clean Your Gaming Mouse (Without Breaking It)

Your mouse is one of the most-used parts of your setup -- and one of the easiest to overlook when it comes to cleaning. Over time, sweat, dust, skin oil, and gunk can build up on the buttons, in crevices, and around the sensor. This guide shows you how to safely clean your gaming mouse and keep it in top condition.

What You'll Need:

Quick Cleaning (Weekly or as needed)
This is your go-to surface clean to keep grime in check:

  1. Unplug your mouse or power it off if it's wireless.
  2. Wipe the top and sides with a microfiber cloth slightly dampened with alcohol. Avoid soaking.
  3. Use a dry cotton swab or soft brush to clean around the buttons and scroll wheel.
  4. Blow compressed air into seams or tight spots to push out dust or crumbs.

Deep Cleaning (Monthly or as needed)
For when your mouse feels sticky, laggy, or looks grungy:

  1. Flip it over and clean around the sensor using a dry swab. Be gentle — the lens is delicate.
  2. Use a toothpick or tweezers to remove buildup from button creases, DPI switches, or grip textures.
  3. Gently spin the scroll wheel while wiping with a damp cotton swab to clean its edges.
  4. Wipe the mouse feet to remove gunk that can affect glide. Alcohol on a cloth works well.
  5. Check your mousepad — a dirty pad can re-dirty your mouse in minutes.
